Your UAN (Universal Account Number) is the master key to your EPF account. Without it, you cannot check your PF balance, update KYC, file a claim, or transfer your PF. When UAN-related problems arise — activation failures, forgotten passwords, wrong mobile numbers, or multiple UANs — people often hit a wall and give up.

In 2026, EPFO has made several improvements including Face Authentication on UMANG and DigiLocker integration. But many legacy issues persist. This guide covers every common UAN problem and the precise solution for each one.

What Is UAN and Why It Is the Most Important Number in Your EPF Journey

UAN stands for Universal Account Number — a 12-digit number assigned by EPFO to every EPF member. Unlike your individual PF account number (which changes with every employer), your UAN remains the same throughout your entire career. It is the single identifier that links all your PF accounts across different employers.

Once activated, your UAN lets you: check your PF balance and passbook, update and manage KYC, file withdrawal and transfer claims online, link and merge old PF accounts, download your UAN card from DigiLocker, and verify your Aadhaar seeding status.

💡
Where to find your UAN

Your UAN is printed on your monthly salary slip under the PF details section. It is also available in your offer letter from employers who joined after UAN became mandatory (2014 onwards). If you cannot find it anywhere, SMS EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 from your Aadhaar-registered mobile number, or check the EPFO Member Portal using your PF account number and date of birth.

How to Activate Your UAN: Step by Step

UAN activation is a one-time process. Once activated, you log in with your UAN and password going forward.

1

Go to member.epfindia.gov.in and click “Activate UAN” on the homepage.

2

Enter your UAN, Aadhaar or PAN, date of birth, and mobile number. The mobile number must be the one linked to your Aadhaar for OTP verification.

3

Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Under EPFO 3.0, Face Authentication via UMANG is also available if you prefer not to use OTP.

4

Set a new password. Password requirements: 8 to 25 characters, at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase, one number, and one special character.

5

Activation complete. Log in with your UAN and new password. You will be prompted to update your profile and KYC on first login.

12 Common UAN Problems and Exact Fixes

Problem 1

UAN Not Activating — OTP Not Received

The most common activation issue. The OTP goes to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number — not necessarily the number your employer has on record. If your Aadhaar-linked number is inactive or changed, the OTP will not arrive.

Fix 1: Check that you are entering the mobile number currently linked to your Aadhaar — not your current mobile number if they differ. Update your Aadhaar mobile number at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra if it has changed.

Fix 2: Use Face Authentication via the UMANG app as an alternative to OTP — available under EPFO 3.0 in 2026. Download UMANG, go to EPFO section, and use biometric verification to activate UAN without SMS OTP.

Problem 2

Forgot UAN Password

You previously activated your UAN but cannot remember the password.

Fix: Go to member.epfindia.gov.in → click “Forgot Password” → enter your UAN and Aadhaar-linked mobile number → enter OTP → set a new password. The reset uses the same OTP process as activation.

Problem 3

Mobile Number Not Linked to UAN or Aadhaar

You have a new mobile number, but neither your UAN nor your Aadhaar is updated with it. This blocks all OTP-dependent actions.

Fix your UAN mobile: Log in to Member Portal → Manage → Contact Details → Update Mobile Number. The system will send an OTP to your old registered number to verify the change — so you need access to the old number for this method.

If you cannot access the old number: Visit your regional EPFO office with your UAN, Aadhaar, and new mobile number to update it manually. Alternatively, use UMANG Face Authentication which bypasses mobile OTP entirely.

Problem 4

UAN Shows Wrong Name or Date of Birth

Your UAN profile has a spelling error in your name or an incorrect date of birth — often entered wrongly by a previous employer during registration.

Through current employer: Request your current employer’s HR to raise a correction request on the EPFO Employer Portal. This is the fastest route if your current employer is responsive.

Through Joint Declaration: If your employer is unavailable or the error was created by a previous closed employer, a Joint Declaration filed with EPFO along with supporting documents (Aadhaar, PAN, birth certificate) corrects the record. Our PF consultants handle this starting at Rs 1,500.

Problem 5

“Invalid UAN” Error on Login

The portal says your UAN is invalid even though you are certain of the number.

Check 1: Confirm the UAN from your salary slip — do not rely on memory. UAN is exactly 12 digits. Some older salary slips show a shortened version.

Check 2: Your UAN may not be activated yet. If your employer generated it recently, it can take 48 to 72 hours to become active in the system. Try again after 3 days.

Check 3: Call EPFO helpdesk at 1800-118-005 and ask them to verify your UAN status and whether it is correctly registered in the system.

Problem 6

UAN Account Locked After Multiple Failed Login Attempts

After 5 consecutive wrong password entries, the EPFO portal locks your account temporarily.

Fix: Wait 30 minutes for the automatic unlock. Then use “Forgot Password” to reset rather than guessing again. If the account remains locked after 30 minutes, call EPFO helpdesk at 1800-118-005 to request a manual unlock.

Problem 7

UAN Not Linked to Current Employer

You can log in to the portal but cannot see your current employer’s contributions in the passbook, or KYC shows no employer for verification.

Fix: Your current employer has not linked your UAN to their EPFO establishment account. Contact your HR or payroll department and provide your UAN number. Ask them to link it. This must be done by the employer — you cannot do it yourself from the member portal. New contributions take one pay cycle to reflect after linking.

Problem 8

Aadhaar Seeding Failed — “Aadhaar Not Seeded” Error

Your Aadhaar is linked in KYC and shows Approved, but you still get an “Aadhaar not seeded” error when filing claims or during verification.

Fix: KYC approval and Aadhaar seeding are separate backend processes. To complete seeding, visit a Common Service Centre (CSC) or use the UMANG app’s Aadhaar seeding feature under the EPFO section. Bring your Aadhaar and UAN. Allow 3 to 7 working days for seeding to reflect in the system.

Problem 9

Cannot Download UAN Card

You want to download your UAN card as proof of your PF account but cannot find the option on the portal.

From the Member Portal: Log in → View → UAN Card. Download as PDF.

From DigiLocker (2026 update): Your UAN Card, Pension Payment Order (PPO), and Scheme Certificate are now available directly from DigiLocker under the EPFO section — no login to the member portal needed. Link your DigiLocker account to Aadhaar and access all documents there.

Problem 10

Portal Shows “No Records Found” for PF Balance

You log in successfully but the passbook shows no records or a zero balance despite knowing you have contributed to PF.

Check 1: Your employer may not have linked your UAN to their establishment — see Problem 7 above.

Check 2: Contributions from previous employers under a different PF account number may not yet be linked to your current UAN. File a consolidation request through the member portal to merge old accounts.

Check 3: If your employer is not depositing PF contributions on time (a compliance issue), the balance will not reflect. Raise a grievance on epfigms.gov.in citing your employer’s non-deposit of PF contributions.

Problem 11

EPFO Portal Not Loading / Showing Server Error

The EPFO Member Portal is notoriously slow and often down, particularly during the first and last weeks of the month when payroll processing peaks.

Fix 1: Try mid-week, mid-month (Tuesday to Thursday, 10am to 4pm). Avoid Monday mornings and month-end dates when server load is highest.

Fix 2: Use the UMANG app as an alternative to the web portal — it accesses the same EPFO backend but often has better uptime for mobile users.

Fix 3: For balance checks, the missed call service works even when the portal is down. Give a missed call to 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number.

Problem 12

UAN Inoperative / Account Marked Inactive

EPFO marks UAN accounts as “inoperative” when there have been no contributions for 36 months. The balance remains — it does not lapse — but the account requires reactivation steps.

Fix: Log in to the Member Portal and update your KYC documents (Aadhaar, PAN, bank account) and submit a reactivation request. If you are re-employed, ensure your current employer links your UAN and contributes — this automatically reactivates the account. If you want to file a withdrawal from an inoperative account, contact your regional EPFO office or a PF consultant for guidance on the specific steps.

The Multiple UAN Problem — and How to Merge Them

One of the most common and most problematic UAN situations: having two or more UANs because different employers generated new ones instead of using your existing UAN. Two UANs for the same person is a violation of EPFO rules and must be resolved before you can withdraw or transfer your PF.

⚠️
How this happens

Before UAN became mandatory and well-understood, some employers or payroll vendors created fresh UANs for new employees instead of asking for the existing one. If you did not provide your UAN when joining, a new one may have been created. You now have two UANs, two PF accounts, and a problem that blocks any claim processing.

  • Call EPFO helpdesk at 1800-118-005 and report that you have multiple UANs. Provide both UAN numbers and your Aadhaar — they will initiate the deactivation of the duplicate
  • Alternatively, raise a grievance on epfigms.gov.in with subject “Multiple UAN deactivation request” and list both UANs with your Aadhaar number
  • EPFO will deactivate the newer (duplicate) UAN and consolidate the PF balance under your original primary UAN
  • Processing typically takes 15 to 30 days — track via your grievance reference number

EPFO 3.0: Face Authentication via UMANG

One of the most significant improvements in 2026 is the ability to activate UAN, verify identity, and perform certain EPFO transactions using Face Authentication on the UMANG app — no mobile OTP required. This is particularly useful when:

  • Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number has changed and you cannot receive OTP
  • The old mobile number is inactive and you cannot update it through the portal
  • You want to activate UAN without an SMS OTP dependency
  • You are accessing EPFO services from an area with poor network connectivity
🔧
How to use Face Authentication on UMANG

Download the UMANG app → Log in with your mobile number → Search “EPFO” → Select the service you need → Choose “Face Authentication” when prompted for verification → The app uses your device camera for biometric match against your Aadhaar facial data. Ensure good lighting and hold the device at eye level for accurate recognition. The process takes under 30 seconds when lighting is good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Several ways: check your salary slip under the PF deduction section — UAN is usually printed there. Send an SMS “EPFOHO UAN ENG” to 7738299899 from your Aadhaar-registered mobile. Visit the EPFO Member Portal homepage and use the “Know Your UAN” option by entering your registered mobile number and date of birth. Your UAN is also available on your EPFO passbook if you have previously logged in. If all else fails, contact your employer’s HR — they must have your UAN on record.
No. EPFO allows only one UAN per individual regardless of how many employers you work for simultaneously. If you have two employers, both should contribute PF to the same UAN. Provide your existing UAN to any new employer at the time of joining. If a second employer has created a new UAN, you must get the duplicate merged — follow the multiple UAN resolution process described above.
Yes, UAN is permanent and does not change across employers. It is your single identifier for EPF throughout your career. When you join a new employer, provide your existing UAN and the employer links their establishment’s PF contributions to your existing UAN. Your individual PF account number will change with each employer, but the UAN remains constant. All accounts across all employers are accessible and manageable through the single UAN login.
All EPFO-registered employers can look up any employee’s UAN on the EPFO Employer Portal using the employee’s Aadhaar or PAN. If your employer claims not to know your UAN, ask them specifically to check in the employer portal under employee records. If they are genuinely not finding it, call EPFO helpdesk at 1800-118-005 with your Aadhaar number and they will confirm your UAN directly. Do not allow an employer to create a new UAN — insist they use your existing one.
